Founded in Marbella in 1990, FM Consulting has seen the town and the Costa del Sol evolve amid periods of great growth and development.
Businesses, which long understood the importance of attracting an affluent international clientele, have led the way in re-establishing the town as one of the top Mediterranean destinations for high net-worth individuals, by making significant investments in the luxury tourism and residential sectors.
While sun, sea and sand have always been the core attractions of the Marbella area, golf has also been important for extending the tourist season and attracting affluent visitors to the area; whether to purchase property for their personal use or invest in ambitious leisure projects having seen the potential for good returns. The 1997 Ryder Cup at Valderrama gave the region a boost that cannot be underestimated, with the many new courses and associated high-end property developments that followed, attracting hundreds of thousands of international visitors annually, and creating thousands of jobs.
Building Marbella for luxury tourism sector
Meanwhile, backed by the town hall’s promotion of Marbella, the establishment of blue-chip events such as the Starlite Festival has raised the town’s profile immeasurably, opening up new markets across the globe for the area’s exclusive property and five-star holiday resorts, and attracting large amounts of inward investment that can be measured in the billions of euros since 1990.
The complementary efforts made by the central and regional governments (Junta de Andalucía), and town councils in coastal resorts, particularly Marbella, have borne fruit with the quality of the facilities on offer to an ever more demanding and discerning holiday maker and resident, having improved greatly in the past 25 years. As part of that commitment, and crucially for the economic well-being and future prospects of the region, the infrastructure has been enhanced immeasurably too, bringing benefits to the businesses and people of the Costa del Sol as the area entrenched its position at the forefront of the luxury tourism sector.
Investment in roads, particularly the new AP7 toll road and initiatives designed to remove bottlenecks and blackspots on the A7 (the old N340), has made Marbella and the Costa del Sol more accessible than ever before, and opened up new areas to international travellers. This, along with the opening of the new terminal at Málaga-Costa del Sol airport, is part of the reason we have been seeing record numbers of tourists visiting the region this year and last.
Over the years, the Costa del Sol has had to increase the number of beds on offer to accommodate these holidaymakers, as well as expand the increasingly important residential tourism sector. In 1990 many of the properties sold were purely holiday homes, but over the past 25 years the numbers of people looking to not just visit, but to open businesses and bring up families here as well as retire, has seen a significant increase.
